A brief reminder that the IPF Print & Projected Images event is less than 2 weeks away - the two-day event will take place in Athlone Institute of Technology on Sat. Feb 11th and Sun. Feb 12th.

SATURDAY
Don't forget that early booking is advisable for the lecture and workshop on Saturday which will be delivered by acclaimed landscape photographer Tony Worobiec, FRPS - more details at http://irishphoto.ie/index.php/2011/12/tony-worobiec-frps-lecture/ . Places for the morning lecture and/or afternoon workshop can be reserved online on www.irishphoto.ie and those wishing to attend are advised to e-mail the competition co-ordinator Michael O'Sullivan at info@mosullivanphoto.com to check on the availability of places.

SUNDAY

The main competition event will take place on Sunday with judging of PPI entries expected to begin from 9.30am onwards. The judges in this years competition are Tony Worobiec, FRPS from the UK; Glyn Edmunds ARPS, EFIAP/s, EPSA from the UK and Richard Dister EPSA from Belgium.

This year Epson have once again kindly agreed to sponsor prizes for the PPI finals. As in previous years they are providing seven boxes of paper for the gold medal winners of the open categories at both non-advanced and advanced levels. There will also be a box of paper for the overall winner.
There will also be a raffle over the weekend with great prizes up for grabs! Among the fab prizes to be won is a weekend photography workshop with John Hooton valued at €295. John has kindly donated this fab prize, which includes two nights B&B on a self catering basis plus course tuition on either April 20th-22nd or May 11th-13th.

Please also note that the Creggan Court hotel is offering a special rate to IPF members for the weekend of €50 per single room per night or €40 per person sharing per night. On the Saturday night at 7pm, the IPF will host a dinner at the Creggan Court. Tickets are €20 each and can be booked through the hotel. Early booking for both the rooms and dinner is advised, as this is the weekend leading up to Valentine's Day and is expected to be busy!

Ron and Elaine decided to meet up on Sunday 27th November at the Clock Tower in Waterford at 3pm. They plan to have a look around the town and hopefully get a nice sunset later on. Here is the second in our RAW photo edit, this is where a member of the club edits another of the members Raw photo's, the idea is that by doing this an putting the video's up on the site that members can learn and grow their skills in photo editing. The image this month is from Mary Kinsella and it is an image taken at the Cliffs of Moher. The selection along the top of the cliff would want to be done a bit more carfully and slower (taking more time), but I think you will still get the overall idea.

This is the first in what is hoped to be a new feature of the club, where Francis Quigley edits one of the members RAW images. The first person to submit an image is Martin Tobin and Francis shows us how he would edit this photo if it was his own raw image. The hope is that members will be able to learn and get tips and hopefully give tips on ways to post process your images. I hope you enjoy and please leave a comment or feedback on what you think. Francis is not saying that this is the right or only way to edit your image but it is one way to do it. So members come on get your raw images into Francis so he can edit them.

I know doing it do it a blog format. It does take commitment as you
have to produce a shot everyday. This is great for anyone interested
in photoblogging

commitment. In which you have 31 days to take 35 photos by the end of
which you produce 1pdf which you can share with everyone else that is
doing the project or if you wish can be printed in book format by

great & not so great examples of the work that has been produced on
the site. I'm going to give you a word of warning some of the books
may contain nudity & is probably not suitable if you're using the
computer at work.

Saturday Morning Workshop

On Saturday morning Ciaran Whyte, FIPF will give a workshop between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
The workshop will cover:

Basics of off camera flash

Simple diffusion techniques (bouncing, reflectors, umbrellas)

Making small flash look like big flash

More advanced techniques (multiple lights, rim lighting, hair lighting)

Saturday Morning Workshop

On Saturday morning Ciaran Whyte, FIPF will give a workshop between 10:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
The workshop will cover:

Basics of off camera flash

Simple diffusion techniques (bouncing, reflectors, umbrellas)

Making small flash look like big flash

More advanced techniques (multiple lights, rim lighting, hair lighting)

SACC Print and Projected Image Competition,

Congrats to member Anne Howard, whose colour print depicting a boat on the Suir was awarded 'Highly Commended' (4th place) at the regional round of the National Print & Projcted Image of the Year competition held at Kilcoran Lodge, Cahir, yesterday December 19th. Despite the weather conditions, entries were as high in number as previous years, also the number of entrants attending from clubs in ten southern counties. The panel of adjudicators, including the current President of the Irish Photographic Federation - Mark Sedgwick, who came from Dublin and Celbridge camera clubs, were quite surprised at the volume of work.

This was Annes first ever entry in this competition. The same image features on the front cover of a Carrick swimming club calendar which has just been launched. Even though some other club members didn't take home any medals, some of their work qualified for entry in the national final which will be held in Athlone end of February. All three monochrome entries by one local member qualified, also one of his colour prints and one or two of his projected images. We are awaiting detailed results from the SACC secretary, as it was extremely difficult to keep track of any individal's work at the crowded meeting.

SACC Print and Projected Image Competition, Sunday December 19th (New Date)

Hi all,

There is a new date and location for the SACC Print and Projected Image Competition. It will now be held on Sunday December 19th, at the Kilcoran Lodge Hotel, Cahir, Co. Tipperary (www.kilcoranlodgehotel.com).

The SACC AGM will also be held at this meeting. We will be looking to elect a Chairman and a Treasurer.

Per previous comments: The Print & Projected competition follows IPF rules. Prints must be mounted on 20" X 16" (50.8 X 40.6 cm) board and have a maximum print size of not more than 192 square inches (2,065 cm²). Prints which fail to meet this criteria will not be accepted. While previously images may have been remounted, the resources to do this no longer exist.

SKYLINE GALLERY:

On one of the most interesting stands I visited at the recent RDS ARTS FAIR was that by professional landscape photographer - Eoghan Kavanagh of Kenmare. He showed some excellent panoramic views from the S.W., and other work.

To achieve his artistic vision Eoghan spends a lot of time planning and choosing locations and waiting for natural effects to emerge from the changing light on the landscape.

Eoghan works with a specially constructed Ebony Field Camera and a 75 mm Linhof Lens. The 5"x 4" plate film captures each scene with immense detail and allows him the freedom to reproduce large scale prints up to 3m (10 feet!) in length without compromising image quality.

The results are dramatic and give the viewer a real sense of the location. Eoghan is always on the look out for great locations around Ireland and updates his collection regularly. Click here to browse the online gallery, which includes some interesting videos also:-

County Classic Photography

County Classics- The Exhibition-Richard Cutbill Photography

On Now in the foyer of Dungarvan Library, Davitts Quay, Dungarvan Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm (Wednesday & Thursday open unit 8pm) and will run for at least two weeks.

The 'County Classic' collection was formed for the Dungarvan Observer who ran a weekly competition showing a photograph of a view within County Waterford. The readers were invited to write in to the newspaper and in less than 20-words convince the Editor James lynch why they would like to own the Print.

The winner would receive a first edition A3 sized print, mounted & framed. The superb image printing was carried out & Sponsored by Murray Pharmacy-Fuji Digital Image Services (Gratton Square, Dungarvan). The excellent double mount & hand made black frame was Sponsored by Pat Ahearn of Dreoilin Glass Quality Mounting & Framing Services (Shandon Business Park, Dungarvan). This competition ran for 20-weeks, the images are on display today, printed and mounted by my sponsors.

I think we were all surprised by the initial and continuous response of the readership; it has certainly been very successful, for in reminded readers just what a beautiful County we inhabit. It was amazing what these images meant to some people and the memories they provoked, for a photographer it has be a truly wonderful experience.

Sean O' Briain, Waterford, nominated for Best use of the internet award
Sean is passionate about photography, heritage and genealogy. He puts his pictures on www.carrickcameraclub.com <http://www.carrickcameraclub.com/> but he also uses the website flickr. Sean uses his computer to send photographs to friends and family and also to the numerous clubs he is involved in. He is currently preparing a slide show and talk on his recent trip to Scotland and the Outer Hebrides. He also is a very welcome guest to functions where he voluntarily takes hundreds of pictures. He will then work on them using Photoshop on his computer and present people with the best pictures on a disc.
He also designs and puts together the Portlaw pastoral newsletter each week and delivers it by disc for printing.

Traditional music is a keen interest of his and he sings and plays the concertina and harmonica. He uses the internet to research the words for songs and uses Youtube to hear recordings of songs he is interested in.

In terms of historical and genealogical interests he will use google to find any information he needs. He also uses Ebay to buy small artifacts, an example of this is a recent purchase of a slaves nametag and picture postcards. He lives in Portlaw Co. Waterford, of timbermill and cotton mill fame and loves to research history in relation to Portlaw and his birthplace Killenaule, Co. Tipperary. Sean is 76 years old and getting younger!

Upcoming Lecture

The talk is entitled the Photography of William Despard Hemphill and other photographic collections held in the County Museum. The talk will be given by Pat Holland, author of a book called Tipperary Images which looks at the work of Hemphill. Admission is free and the talk begins at 7.30pm.

This is a detailed workshop which is suitable for beginners and more advanced wildlife photography enthusiasts. It run's over a weekend and will look at the latest equipment used by digital stills wildlife photographers, camera settings and techniques for photography in challenging conditions plus all the tips you will pick up from the tutors and other students during the workshop.

Where: BALTIMORE, WEST CORK, IRELAND.

There will be many opportunities for practical wildlife photography at selected venues around West Cork. If you want to make better digital wildlife photographs or add wildlife photography to your range of skill sets as a photographer then this weekend course will prove invaluable.

With: AWARD WINNING WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHERS PHIL POUND and CHARLIE LEE. The emphasis is on practical photography sessions.

SACC Calendar 2010/2011

Hi all,

The following is a brief of the 2010/2011 SACC calendar:

Our first competition will be the SACC Print & Projected Image Competition. This is normally held the first Sunday in December. I should have final confirmation of the date and location within the next week. The SACC Print & Projected Image Competition is a qualifier for its respective IPF national Print and Projected Image Competition.
Our AGM will also be held at the SACC Print & Projected image competition.
The next competition is the SACC Nature Competition which is normally held in the 3rd or 4th week of January. The SACC Nature Competition is a qualifier for its respective IPF national Nature Competition.
The next competition is the SACC Annual Inter-club Competition and Exhibition. This is usually held the end of February.
The final competition is the Creative Digital competition. This is normally held the end of May.

Note: The SACC does not hold a shield competition. All clubs are entitled to enter the national shield without qualification.

Podge Kelly and Epson Workshop Sunday, October 10th next. Cost €50. Limited spaces available.

Hi Everybody

A lot of changes have happened since our last news email update and not only in the photo world!

Back in January we moved our entire business over to our premises in Airside, Swords and with the move we changed our business model from a retail environment to a trade sales and demonstration area. We even put in a full working studio and this Sunday sees the first of a planned series of workshops geared around this. Our website has grown quite a lot too and we have increased our web products gradually over the year. Most recently we added a "Photokina in Pictures" tab from Sheldon's visit to Co logne which has been getting lots of hits. Check out the site when you have a few minutes.

On Saturday the 9th next we are holding an open day to showcase Epson's printer range and we invite you to come along and have one of your images printed out and catch up with recent events and product launches from Photokina. We will be extra friendly with teas and coffee all day and if you fancy a few shots in the studio with the Elinchrom lighting we will even let you have a go. This gives us an opportunity to test out all the equipment that we will have in use for our workshop event the next day and everybody attending on either day will be entitled to some special pricing on the Epson printers, Datacolor Calibration and LaCie products as well as a host of other products.

Sunday the 10th next, we are delighted to have have joined forces with Epson to bring you a day of image processing with the accomplished photographer, Podge Kelly. We will have a model on h a nd to pose for the attendants and Podge will be demonstration his workflow techniques where everything from posing the model to printing and framing the pictures will be discussed. A very few spaces are still left so please contact us if you are interested. The cost for the day is €50.

We will also be show casing the latest products from our partners LaCie, Hahnemuehle, Fuji Hunt and Datacolor where we will have the very latest lens calibration and camera colour calibration kits.

Drop by and use the studio and get some prints printed while you are at it.

Remember that special prices apply to all people attending so grab yourself a bargain while you are there.

IPF Print and Projected Image Competition

Attached is a copy of the entry form and rules for the regional qualifying rounds. I have also attached the program for the weekend of the finals. I would ask each club with a website to post these items to it; and, if possible, to have the program for the weekend open on a page in order to promote the workshop and lectures for the weekend. Entry form and rules are also available for download on the IPF website. I would also ask each club to emphasise to their members that the mount size is 20" x 16". The Creggan Court Hotel has agreed a rate of €40 per person sharing and €50 for a single room for those staying over for the dinner on Saturday night.

We had a great outing to Ballingara Racing Stables the home of Pat Flynn Racing on saturday morning last. There was a great turn out from the club despite the poor weather and we were made very welcome by all the staff in the yard. Thanks to everyone involved.

9 of the 11 New Committee members pictured at last nights AGM

Carrick Camera Club is delighted to announce our new committee who were elected at last nights AGM in the Carraig. The newly elected chairman is Tony Fitzgerald with the vice Chairman position taken up by Eddie Conney, the new secretary Frankie Cullinane will be assisted by the assistant secretary Joe Cashin, and Tom Grace took up the position as Treasure. The other committee members include Anne Howard, Michael Hickey, Nicola Kenny, Pat Nolan, Wayne Littlewood, & Paddy Tubritt. It was great to see so many people willing to take a position on the committee and it is a sign of how healthy the club is that people are willing to do their bit to move the club from strength to strength. The club now has a membership of close to 60 and will still have enquires for new members which is fantastic.

As promised, here is the tutorial for what I call "underwater" product photography (not sure what the right name for this). We shoot several products, from fruits to a shampoo bottles, and now I am glad to show you the result.

This is the most enjoyable photo-shot I had for last few month: not only the most technically challenging but the end result is the most eye-catching and outstanding.

Canon Ireland visit

We had a great day yesterday when we hosted Canon Ireland at the club for a full day of seminars on cameras, flash printing and software.
There was 70 people in attendance from camera clubs near and far, and we all had great day and learned a huge amount from Martin McHugh, Canon's head technical Rep, and from Dave McKane from Institute of Photography,

Off Camera Flash

Following my talk on Wireless flash last night here are some ebay prices of the equipment I spoke about.

Wireless flash triggers
kits available from €30 and some actually now have umbrella mounts built into the unit.

You can get a stand, umbrealla head and shot through umbrealla for as little as €13. (as pictured above)

A higher spec flash than the one I was showing you last night which actually allows for an external power supply to be used instead of batteries and has a pc sync socket is available for €60 YN 560.
Or the model I had last night the YongNuo YN 460 for as little as €40.

So if you are interested in trying this type of photography have a shop around and you'd be surprised what you could get for yourself for under €100. (I am not recommending any of these products or shops but all I will say is there is some excellent value out there so shop around).

I recommend anyone interested in off camera flash (aka Strobist) take a look at the website http://www.strobist.blogspot.com/ and in particular take a look at their lighting 101 on the RHS of the page it takes you through all the steps of off camera flash and also a book I am reading which I have found great is http://www.veroskyphoto.com/flash-photography-book.html (it is an ebook inother words you download it to your computer (or a fancy phone) and you can read it from there).

Canon intend setting up a mini studio

Canon Ireland visit hosted by Carrick Camera Club.

The event will take place in the Carraig Hotel (main street, carrick-on-suir) on Saturday 11th September 2010.

The doors will open at 12.00 noon.

Canon teams agenda for the 11th Sept. We have broken this down into 4 main parts.
1. Wireless flash. In this session we will show the members how to get the best out of wireless flash. At the end of the day we will also have time for the members to try out the flash systems.
2. Techniques. In this session we will speak about general techniques needed across all types of photography. Hints and tips will be a big part of this.
3. Print. In this session we will speak about the benefits of print. We will also give hints and tips on how to get the best prints.
4. DPP/EOS utility. This session will be on Canon software that comes bundled with our cameras. The reason we have left this till last is so anyone who doesn't use Canon and doesn't want to hear about the software can go and use the products while we speak to the Canon users on the software. The software is a whole editing suite package.

The agenda we propose is as follows

13:15 - 13:45 Wireless flash
13:45 - 14:00 Q&A on Flash
14:00 - 14:15 Break
14:15 - 15:00 Photography techniques
15:00 - 15:15 Techniques Q&A

16:00 - 16:30 DPP, EOS utility (Canon Software's)
16:30 - 17:30 Hands On

There is no charge for the day however places are limted by the capacity of the room so we would ask people to please confirm as early as possible if they would like to attend the event. Also Canon need to know numbers one to two weeks in advance so that can have enough staff on for the event. Details of the event are given below in an email from Canon.

Photo opportunity - Carrick AC 5k road race Friday evening (today)

I had a call from a James Fox (Carrick Athletic Club) just before work this evening, asking if there was anyone in the club interested in taking photos tomorrow evening (Fri 6th Aug) of their final Road Race of the year.

The 5k RR is taking place in rathgormock starting at 7:30 and they are expecting about 200 participants. The club would be delighted if there was anyone available to take photos and put them up on the web (flickr or other similar).
Can you send out a mail to the club members to let them know of the event.
